WHAT IS PEYRONIE’S DISEASE (PD)?

Peyronie’s Disease (PD) is a condition resulting in an abnormal bend in the penis during an erection that may cause mild pain and interfere with sexual intercourse. The curve is attributed to a buildup of fibrous scar tissue or plaque that can inhibit the complete straightening of the penis during an erection.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Symptoms include a bend or curve in the penis during an erection and the presence of a lump or hardness under the skin along the shaft of the penis.

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

The diagnosis is usually made during a physical exam. Your Esse Health Urologist may request an X-ray or Ultrasound (an image created by high-frequency sound waves) to get more information on the amount and positioning of the scar tissue.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

If intercourse is satisfactory, no treatment may be needed. Oral medications, mechanical therapies, collagenase injections and topical treatments are possible treatment options. Surgical options also are available. Your Esse Health Urologist will discuss which treatment options would be best for you.
